The Venue:
The Bamboo Academy in Ravenshoe, on the Atherton Tablelands, Queensland Australia.
We have 5 acres in the heart of this small town with rich red volcanic soil. There are 30+ bamboo species planted in our developing permaculture system. The bamboos have been selected for their high value usage, ease of maintenance and local climatic suitability.
There is plenty of covered workshop space as well beautiful shady garden spaces.

Bamboo: The Plant. Aug 15th
Growing, maintaining, harvesting, curing and preservation. Explore the annual cycle of bamboo and learn how harvest the right species at the right time to have good production of high quality bamboo poles and shoots.
Hands on clump maintenance, harvest and preservation.
Our bamboos are 4 - 5 years old and it is the first harvest of our new clumps. Many species of bamboo with many different uses.

Bamboo: The Craft Aug 28th & 29th
Basics of Bamboo Craft
This 2 day workshop covers the basic skills required to make bamboo joints, to split and weave bamboo. Both high and low technology tools and techniques will be used.
Day 1, learn bamboo pole selection and anatomy, bamboo tools and their uses, the basic joints and how to split bamboo for weaving or slats.
Day 2, participate in a number of projects, practicing the essential skills while creating a range of craft items.

When: Saturday 28th, Sunday 29th August. 9 am to 5 pm If these dates don't suit please let us know as we will run this essential workshop again and have some flexibility with dates for future workshops.

Bamboo In Permaculture Systems Sept 12th
The many uses
Look at the multiple uses of bamboo in planning your gardens or property. Where bamboo fits in the system and it's many environmental uses. Explore bamboo and contours, wind, sound, erosion control, grey water treatment, in the vege patch, animal habitat and systems and so on....

Screens and Fences Oct 10th
1 day workshop focused on using bamboo to build screens and fences for both indoor and outdoor use. Learn how to utilize the tops and branches of bamboo which is usually considered waste material. We will make several screens of different styles including split, woven and brush.

Furniture Sun Oct 24th
This 1 day workshop will focus on the techniques of making bamboo furniture. This is an advanced workshop that will build upon the skills acquired in the basics of bamboo craft (Aug 28 & 29). It is an opportunity to design and build a piece of furniture. If there is sufficient interest we will follow this workshop with regular times when you can access the tools and workshop so that you can continue with designs and projects.

Cost: $100 plus materials. We will have a range of excellent quality treated bamboo available.

Structures Oct 31st
1 day focused on bamboo structures. This is an advanced workshop that will build upon the skills acquired in the basics of bamboo craft (Aug 28 & 29). We will look at the specifics of designing bamboo structures and then create bamboo scale models so that you gain experience with the different joining techniques.
